Dear Parents,

Monday 18th March - Easter Eggstravaganza

This will take place at the Infants School 3.30-4.30pm. Please see the attached poster from

the Friends of Scoill yn Jubilee giving details of the event.

Decorated Egg Competition

All entries taken to the Infant School on the Monday morning (18th) will receive a

certificate. There are also first, second and third prize certificates for each year group

class, and a pre-school class. For parents/grandparents we are holding an adult class inviting

you to enter a decorated Easter Bonnet. Judging will take place during the day and you will be

able to see the judges’ decisions at the Easter Eggstravaganza. The certificates for first,

second and third places for each class will be awarded during our St Ninian’s Easter Services

on Thursday 21st March 9.30am for Infants , 2pm for Juniors. Everyone welcome.

Fair Trade

We are in the middle of Fair Trade fortnight. This morning Rosemary Clarke from the One

World Centre spoke to both infants and juniors about Fair Trade.

Our Easter Eggstravaganza will have a focus on Fair Trade, with large Fair Trade hampers as

raffle prizes. We are asking every child across the two sites to bring in one Fair Trade item

on Monday 11th March to help with this. These items can be left in either school hall in the

labelled areas.

Dress Down Day

On Friday 15th March we are having a dress down day and instead of making a donation for

this we are asking children to bring in the following items for the fair:

• Infants - an Easter Egg

• Juniors - a yellow item (can be jelly, Easter chicks, juice, tin of sweetcorn, plants etc)

Helpers

We are asking for volunteers to help man the stalls for half an hour at the event. Please

could you sign up on the sheets outside each school office. Thank you.

We also need helpers to set up on the afternoon of the event from 1.30pm at the infants. If

you are able to help please sign the sheet outside the school offices.

Tickets for the Eggstravaganza will be £1 (to include a hot or cold drink and a piece of

chocolate cake) and are available from both offices. Please try and purchase your tickets

before the event so we can get an indication of numbers attending, for the catering. Thank

you.

Transition to Secondary School Meeting

We are holding a meeting for parents whose children will be moving up to secondary school in

September 2013 and September 2014. The meeting will consist of a short presentation by Mr

Keith Winstanley, Deputy Headteacher at Ballakermeen, followed by a question and answer

session; this will be a good opportunity to raise any queries or concerns that have arisen since

the open evening at Ballakermeen last month. The meeting is to be held on Wednesday 13th

March at 6pm. All Y6 and Y5 children and parents are welcome to attend. In addition to this

meeting there will be an opportunity for Y6 parents and pupils to attend drop-in sessions with

a member of the Ballakermeen staff who will be available on the following dates to answer

individual queries and concerns: Monday 18th March, Monday 14th April and Monday 29th

April; between the hours of 2pm and 5pm. Further drop-in sessions will be arranged for the

Summer Term and these will be open to both Y5 and Y6 parents and pupils. No appointment

will be necessary, as these will be on a first come first served basis.

Scholastic Book Club

Accompanying this letter is a Scholastic Book Club letter. Mrs Miller has set up our

Scholastic Book Club school group order online. This means you can now order all the books in

your Book Club leaflet and many more at http://clubs-school.scholastic.co.uk/murrays-road

and, what’s more, you’ll be able to have your books delivered to school for FREE.

You need to order your books by Thursday 21st March 2013. After that date, Mrs Miller will

confirm that all orders are in and the books will be delivered to school for her to hand out.

For every £1 you spend 20p goes back to our school to spend on much-needed books for our

libraries. There are some great bargains with books costing as little as £1.99.

£1 World Book Day vouchers, which will be given out to all children on Friday, cannot be used

for the online ordering system, only if cash is paid. If you prefer to complete the Book Club

form and send the money/cheque into school please place everything in an envelope and

address it FAO: Mrs Miller. All cheques should be made payable to Ballaquayle Infants

School. Thank you.

Health and Safety

We have had a number of concerns expressed recently by parents which we are addressing:

• Dogs - please can I ask that dogs are not tied to any school railings/gate posts. Some

children (and adults) are fearful of dogs and this practice has caused some anxiety.

• Footballs - junior pupils should not be bringing their own footballs to school as we now

have plenty of playground resources and some footballs have been very hard and

heavy, causing injury when kicked or thrown.

• Parents taking other parents’ children home - we have had a few recent incidents of

parents taking children out of the junior playground at the end of the school day

without informing that child’s parents or class teacher. We need to ask that if you are

taking other children home it has firstly been agreed with that child’s parents and

also the class teachers have been informed.

• End of the school day (juniors) - To assist us at the end of the day we are asking

that children from all year groups are collected from the large top playground. Any

pupils using the climbing frame in the lower junior playground at the end of the school

day may only do so when supervised by the adult responsible for that pupil. Thank you

for your support.

Year 6 Cycling Proficiency

Cycling Proficiency for Year 6 pupils will take place the week commencing 8th April. This

gives everyone plenty of time to prepare for the week, ensuring all cycles are in good working

order and all children have cycle helmets.

Spare Clothing

Staff have made a request for any infant boys’ and girls’ trousers which no longer fit your

child to be given to school for when a child has a toileting accident. If your child needs to

borrow spare clothing please could you ensure it is washed and returned to school as soon as

possible. Thank you.

Dinner, Juice, Snack Payments

We recognise it is a nuisance but we would appreciate parents sending in any payments

separately across the two sites if you have both infant and junior children at school. Each

site has to reconcile its own payments. Thank you.

Newsletter 1/3/13

Dear Parents,

New headteacher for Scoill yn Jubilee

I am delighted to inform you that Mrs Jayne Adamson has been appointed as the headteacher of Scoill yn Jubilee as from September 2013.

Mrs Adamson worked as deputy headteacher of Ballaquayle Infants from 2001 until 2007, before leaving to join the Department of Education and Children as a School Improvement Advisor. I found Mrs Adamson to be a very talented leader and teacher when she worked alongside me in leading the infants school.

She will bring a wealth of experience to her new role and having the support of two excellent deputy headteachers will be able to ensure Scoill yn Jubilee is a very successful school wher children are encouraged to aim high and enjoy their learning.

This early appointment ensures that Mrs Adamson will be able to meet regularly with staff in the school to ensure a smooth transition into the next school year.

Yours sincerely

Dear Parents,

Valentine Disco

Thank you to everyone who helped to organise and run our Infant and Junior Valentine Discos.

The two events were very enjoyable and successful. We were able to raise £925 towards our

On Friday 8th March the infants and juniors will be celebrating World Book Day. We are

asking the children to dress up as their favourite character from a book and bring the book

into school to share with everyone. Each child will receive a £1 book token towards a book

purchase. We will be having visitors in school to read across the day.

Andrew Barton Photographers will be in both schools that day to take photographs of the

children with their books. These will be available for purchase from 3pm-4.15pm in the infant

school hall and junior library. 6’’x4’’ print in a mount for £5. Additional copies may be

ordered.

Miss Gray /Mrs Spencer - Cameron Bates

Miss O’Reilly - Conor Harper

Miss Jones - Amie Hill

Mrs May - Adam Palmer

Miss Hesketh - Josh Williams

Mrs Miller - Hope O’Brien

Mrs Keig - Isabelle Walker

Miss Westcott - Craig Chilcott

Their first meeting will be at lunchtime on Thursday 28th February and will continue to meet

on a fortnightly basis.

Year 6 Sex Education

This half term, (4th and 11th March) as part of the National Curriculum in Science and IOM

Department of Education and Children policy, Year 6 classes will be covering the aspects of

growing up, puberty and reproduction, along with feelings and relationships.

We feel that these lessons will be of great benefit to all pupils. As well as learning about

these issues there will be a chance for pupils to ask questions in the lessons. Where this is

appropriate, there will be a chance to provide straightforward answers to ensure that

children receive information which is as accurate and age appropriate as possible.

If you have any questions then please contact the Headteacher or Mrs M Keary, Advisory

Teacher for Healthy Futures (including Sex and Relationships Education) on 693840.

As a parent/carer you have the right, either to withdraw your child from these lessons or to

allow them to take part, but you must inform the school of your decision.

If we do not receive a reply from you by Thursday 28th February, we will assume that

consent has not been given, and your child will not take part in these lessons.

Please complete the slip at the end of this newsletter. Thank you.

PE Kit for juniors

Please could parents ensure all junior children have navy shorts, yellow or red tee shirts and

black pumps to wear for indoor PE lessons. Thank you

Douglas Borough Council Daffodil Competition

Hopefully you have all been looking after your daffodil bulbs ready for judging. Remember

the judges are looking at how well your daffodils have grown but also how creative you have

been in designing a structure around your flowerpots or decorating your pots.

Graham Newsome (Nursery Manager) and a Councillor will attend the Infants site on

Wednesday 27th February in the afternoon and the Juniors on Friday 1st March in the

morning. Please bring your daffodils, clearly marked with your name, to your classroom on the

above dates.

They will judge each class and pick a winner for each class, the winner from each class will be

given an easter egg and a certificate will be printed out at a later date (approximately 2

weeks after the judging). They will take a photo of each class winner with their daffodil in

order that they can then print all the photos and judge the Best in School. The Best in

School will be invited to attend the Council Chambers at the Town hall where they are hoping

to arrange for the Mayor to hand out the prizes.

The photos taken of the best in class will be displayed on display boards in the Council

Chambers on the prize giving day and they will be given to the teachers to give to the pupils

!

at the end of the prize giving. Each school winner will be given an easter egg, a certificate

and a cup they can keep.

The overall school winner will also be announced at the prize giving and they will receive 2

cups which can be displayed at the School for the following year. The School will also receive

a £100.00 voucher. One of the cups and the voucher have been very kindly donated by

Scottish Widows. The winner will also receive a cup they can keep and a certificate. There

are also prizes for second and third place – they will each receive a certificate and a cup they

can keep.

They would also like to take photos of the winners on the prize giving day – these photos

would be used on their website and they will also go into the press.

Reception Parents Invitation to Lunch

During the two weeks commencing 4th March, Reception parents are invited to come to

school at 11.30am to work alongside their child and join them for lunch. If you are unable to

attend personally, please invite a family member to take your place. Lists will be up in each

classroom from today for you to indicate the day you wish to come and let us know if you

would like to order a school dinner (adult lunch is £3.45) or bring your own packed lunch. This

has been a successful project for the last three years which we are hoping to continue to

offer on an annual basis. Due to the limited space available in the classrooms and lunch hall we

are only able to offer one place for a family member for each child. Please could parents

arrive at 11.25am to be taken to their child’s class. Thank you.

Friends of Scoill yn Jubilee

The next meeting of the Friends of Scoill yn Jubilee will be on Wednesday 27th February at

9am in the infants school staffroom to plan an Easter Eggstravaganza. Everyone welcome!

Year 6 AP3 Forms

Just a reminder that we need to have all AP3 forms returned to the school office to support

the transition process to secondary school. Thank you.

based in the infant school hall. Please see the attached poster from the Friends of Scoill yn

Jubilee for details.

Valentine Disco Arrangements

Could all children enter school at the Stoney Road entrance via the Nurture Room. Parents

are asked to take children’s coats home with them for the disco, as we do not have storage

space in the hall. Thank you.

In the unlikely event that the fire alarm goes off during the disco, children are all used to

walking in silence out of the school to gather in pre-arranged places in the playground. We

would ask volunteer helpers to support staff in this routine if required.

At the end of the disco please come into school via the Thorny Road entrance to the hall to

collect your child and leave by the hall doors leading into the Year 1 veranda.

We will operate this routine for both discos. Thank you.

Parent Interview Evenings

All interview times will be sent out before the half term break.

Please come into the hall to look at your child’s books and the accompanying ‘How to help your

child’ sheet which the teacher will discuss with you during the interview. It will really help

the staff if you complete the pupil and parent comment sections. Thank you.

Year 6 Transition Form AP3

All Year 6 pupils have been given an AP3 form today to be completed and returned to the

school office by Monday 4th March at the latest.

The Department and Education and Children have designated Ballerkermeen High School as

our catchment area school for those who live within the school’s own catchment area. Your

children will therefore attend BHS in September unless;

a) they have a sibling currently registered at St Ninians High School who will still be on the

register on 1st September 2013, then your child may attend SNHS.

b) you live outside the school’s catchment area. If this is the case and (a) does not apply,

then your child will go to the secondary school for your area. For example, if you live in St

Johns then your child will go to Queen Elizabeth 11 High School.

Under very rare circumstances it is possible to gain a place at a non-catchment area school.

If you wish to see if your child can be given a place you should ask for an out of catchment

area form, which when completed should be sent to the address on the form and not

returned to school.

If you have any questions please contact DEC’s Legal and Administration Services Division on

685811 and not the school.

Maths Workshop for Reception Parents

Mrs Peirce will be leading a Maths Workshop on Thursday 21st February for parents of

Reception children commencing at 2.15 pm in the infant school hall. You will then have the

opportunity to visit the Reception classrooms to look at a range of activities set out to

support children’s learning of problem solving, reasoning and numeracy. If you would like to

attend please complete the attached slip and return it to the infant school office.

Friends of Murray’s Road 100 Club

Mrs Johnson has asked me to advise parents that she is still receiving money into the Friends

of Murray’s Road account. In order to be able to close this account fully Mrs Johnson is

requesting that any members of the 100 club cancels their direct debit with their bank at

their earliest convenience. Thank you.

Spring 2 Mini Clubs - Infants Site

The Infant Choir with Miss Honner and Miss Bell will continue until the Easter break.

Mrs Taghinejad will be leading a Healthy Cooking Club for Year 2 pupils each Monday at 3.15

pm - 4 pm for 6 weeks, commencing 18th February 2013.

If you would like your child to join this club please complete and return the attached slip to

the infant school office. There are only a limited number of spaces available which will be

allocated on a first come basis, but consideration will be given to how many clubs your child

has previously attended.

Junior Site Mini Clubs - Spring 2

Monday and Tuesday MSR clubs will continue for enrolled children until the Easter break.

Year 5/6 Netball Club with Miss Jones will continue until Easter. Mrs Keig’s Choir on Friday

mornings will continue next half term.

Skipping Club for Years 3/4 each Thursday in the school hall led by Miss O’Reilly and Mrs

Oliphant at 3.30 pm - 4.30 pm.

Year 5/6 Cross Country Club at Nobles Park led by Mrs May and Mrs Dodd on Fridays at 3.30

pm - 4.30 pm.

All clubs will begin the week commencing 18th February 2013. If your child wishes to join any

of the new clubs please complete the form at the end of this letter.

All children should be collected at the end of club sessions from the front entrance. The

exception to this is Cross Country Club, where children should be collected from Nobles Park.

Parents need to meet Mrs May at the carpark entrance for Nobles Park on St Ninians Road.

Swimming Years 5/6

There will not be swimming lessons the first Thursday back after half term (21st February)

for Years 5 and 6. The swimming session has been booked for a swimming gala practice and

you will be informed if your child has been selected for a swimming gala trial that day.

Dear Parents

RETIREMENT

I would like to inform you that I will be retiring from my post of Headteacher at Scoill yn Jubilee at the end of the Summer Term. When asked to take on the role of leading the amalgamation between the infant and junior school it was agreed with the Department that I would do this for 18 months prior to retirement. The amalgamation process has been both challenging and rewarding, and I feel has been successful.

The headteacher appointment will hopefully be made fairly soon to enable us to work together and ensure a smooth handover into the next academic year. The new headteacher will lead a school with fantastic children, hard working and dedicated staff along with very supportive parents and governors.

PARENT INTERVIEWS

This term we have arranged our parent interview evenings straight after half term. These will take place on Tuesday 19th February 4.00pm-7.30pm and Wednesday 20th February 4.00pm-5.30pm.

We have developed a ‘How to help your child’ sheet to share with you at the interview with the key skills identified which staff feel will best move your child on in their learning. We have indicated how we feel your child will be performing in literacy and numeracy at the end of the school year based on present performance. The sheet also contains a section for Pupil Comments for children to either complete on their own or for you to write down for them what they wish to say about what they are doing well and where they need more help. The Parent Comments box is for you to tell us what you feel are your child’s strengths (in or out of school) so we can build on them and if there is anything your child would benefit from having provided at school (if possible).

Please could you return the attached form as soon as possible indicating the days and times you will be available. For parents with more than one child in school please complete one slip for your family so that staff across the two sites can meet and arrange your interview times together. Please return this one slip to the teacher of your youngest child. Thank you.

Your appointment time/times will be sent to you before the half term break. Could I remind parents that children should not attend these interviews.

STAFFING

Mrs Wilson will be returning from maternity leave on 4th February to continue working as part of the Reception Team. Mrs Hindley, who has been covering Mrs Wilson’s post, will continue to work at Scoill yn Jubilee on a part-time basis. Mr Jones, our part-time ESO at the juniors finished working at the school on Friday 18th January to take up a position outside of education.

DINNER/JUICE AND SNACK REMINDERS

Payments are now due and if you have not already done so please would you send in your money as soon as possible. Thank you.

SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS

The present School Council members will have their last meeting on Thursday 31st January. We will be holding our election day for the new members on Friday 22nd February. Now that we have amalgamated the two sites we will be electing just one member from each class rather than two, to enable some joint school council meetings to take place.

If your child is interested in helping to make decisions on how to improve our school they need to make a poster to encourage voters, to be displayed in classrooms on Tuesday 19th February. No posters will be accepted after this date. On Thursday 21st February they need to give a small speech to their class to say why they should be voted onto the council.

MOBILE PHONES

Could I remind parents that children should not have mobile phones in school unless written permission has been requested from the headteacher for a specific purpose.

AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS

If your child is collected by an After School Club please inform the school office as soon as possible in order that we have a record of which Nursery/Children’s Centre your child attends and on which afternoons. If these arrangements change you are requested to inform the school on the day, in addition to informing the After School Club.

SAVE THE CHILDREN FESTIVAL OF TREES

We are delighted to inform you that our Reception classes entry into the festival received an award as ‘Best of Festival Runner Up’ on Friday evening. Well done Reception!

DOUGLAS BOROUGH COUNCIL DAFFODIL COMPETITION

If you haven’t already done so you are advised to bring your daffodil pots indoors in mid January.

PARENT GROUP

The parent group will start on Friday 25th January, 2.10-3.15pm and will run for 10 weeks. Please feel free to come along and try the first session. If you have younger children, you may bring them with you. More information can be obtained from Mrs Taghinejad or Mrs Murphy.

NEIGHBOUR REQUEST

A school neighbour who lives with her 93 year old mother in a house opposite the lower gate on Stoney Road has asked that parents avoid parking across her driveway as access is required at all times. Thank you.

JUNIOR SCHOOL OFFICE HOURS

Could I remind parents that the junior office has to close each day at 3.30pm as the administrators are only employed to this time. If you wish to see the administrators please could you visit the office before the end of the school day. Thank you.

MANX FOLK AWARDS KENSINGTON YOUTH CENTRE

Last year the infants had a very enjoyable and successful day taking part in the above event. This year we are entering both infant and junior classes.

If you are able to help us walk children to and from the event and support the children at the festival please could you contact the school offices:

Diarrhoea and Vomiting Illness-Notice from Department of Education and Children

You may be aware from recent media reports that the level of sickness caused by norovirus – diarrhoea and/or vomiting has been much higher than in previous years. You may also be aware that the virus spreads easily between people and if introduced into semi-closed settings such as schools or care homes, the virus can spread rapidly.

We want to ensure that norovirus outbreaks do not lead to school closures. To help us achieve this we would like to request you to observe the following:

  • If your child has vomiting and/or diarrhoea, please do not send your child to school.
  • Please do not take your child to hospital or GP surgery. If you need medical advice, please contact your GP or MEDS by phone.
  • Practice good hygiene especially hand washing.
  • Follow the “48 hour rule”: please do not send your child back to school for 48 hours after all the symptoms have stopped, because the child continues to excrete the virus during this time. The most common cause for outbreaks is believed to be failure to follow the 48 hour rule.

For further information on norovirus, please refer to: http://www.gov.im/health/services/Public_Health/HP/CD/dv_norovirus.xml

NSC Swimming - Years 5 & 6

The children will be swimming on Thursday afternoons starting this week on Thursday 10th January 2013.

An alteration to previous times, Miss Keig’s class will now leave at 1.10 pm and Miss Westcott’s class will now leave at 1.30 pm.

All children will be asked to bring with them on that day fitted swim wear (baggy shorts are not permitted as they hinder the learners progress), towels and swimming hats for those children whose hair comes down onto their neck. If your child has long hair please would you consider tying this up on Thursdays.

As goggles can hinder a child’s ability to work in water the swimming instructors suggest that these are not worn. If you wish your child to wear goggles then a letter from yourself will be needed.

If it is possible please would you consider putting your child in trousers on the day we swim as these are often quicker and easier to put on than tights. All earrings will need to be removed prior to coming to school please. Any child with newly pierced ears will be unable to swim.

If your child has had stomach bugs or colds then they are advised not to swim for 48 hrs after being ill. Please do send in a letter if this affects your family.

If any adults are available from your family on a Thursday afternoon and can help support with swimming please can you contact your child’s classroom teacher. Your help will be much appreciated.

Christmas Play Charity Collection - “Decaf”

We are pleased to inform you that we raised a total of £499.33 from the two sites which we are able to send to this new island charity. Thank you for your support.

Copies of the DVD may be ordered at a cost of £10.00. Please complete the order form at the end of this letter and return it to the school office by the end of Tuesday 18th December. Money must be sent with the form for an order to be placed. Please make cheques payable to Ballaquayle School.

Photographs

On Tuesday (11th December) Andrew Barton Photographic Studio will take photographs of all the infant children in their costumes. These will be available for viewing before each performance on Friday 14th. On Monday 17th December Andrew Barton Photographic Studio will take photographs of the junior children. These will be available for viewing before and after each performance on Wednesday 19th December. Some photographs will be available to buy immediately but it will also be possible to place orders. Details will be available at the performances.

Christmas Play Costumes

We feel it is important for every child to be dressed in a costume for our Christmas play. We already have costumes for some of the characters, others we will ask you to help provide. Tomorrow (30th November) we will be sending out slips suggesting the simple costume your child will need. If you do not receive a slip this will mean that the school has a costume for your child.

All infant costumes should be sent into school by Thursday (6th December) on a named coat hanger. All junior costumes should be sent into school on Wednesday 12th December. Should you wish, a named comb or brush may be sent into school for the sole use of your child during preparations for the play.

Are there any parents who would be willing to help dress infant children in their costumes for the play? If so, please complete the attached slip. We are looking for help on Monday (10th December), Tuesday (11th December), Wednesday (12th December) and Friday (14th December) afternoon and Friday evening.

Parents who help to dress children will be able to watch the Monday and Tuesday afternoon performances from the back of the hall. Unfortunately, due to fire regulations, this will not be possible for the Wednesday pm and Friday afternoon and evening performances.

For the evening performances children will need to return to school at 6 pm and should be ready for home at 7.30 pm (7.45 pm for juniors). All children are expected to return to school even if parents do not have tickets for the evening performance. However if your child will not be available on that Friday evening please let us know as soon as possible so that we may allocate their part to another child. Thank you.

Christmas Post

Each Christmas we set up a post box in the school front entrances for children to send cards to each other. We will set up the post boxes on Monday 10th December. If children send cards, please could they add the child’s surname as well as the child’s class. This makes it much easier for the “postmen/women” to sort and deliver cards.

Packed Lunches

Please could I remind parents that children need to bring a spoon in their packed lunch box if they have a yogurt or dessert in a pot. Thank you.

Save the Children Festival of Trees

Our Reception children have placed an entry in the Save the Children Festival of Trees at Ronaldsway Airport. They have been kindly sponsored by Boston Finance to place their entry. Please take a look at our tree from this weekend onwards. We hope you will place a vote for our school in the competition and make a small donation to Save the Children.

FILMCLUB

Our next FILMCLUB event will be on Friday (7th December) where we will be showing “Pirates-an adventure with Scientists” (U certificate) for Year 2 children, who may be collected from Mrs Wainwright’s classroom at 4.20 pm.

For junior children we will be showing “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” (PG). Junior children maybe collected at 4.30 pm from the playground door. All junior children who apply to attend FILMCLUB will be able to attend. There is no restriction on numbers. Children may bring a drink and a biscuit or piece of fruit to consume during the film.

If your child wishes to attend please could you complete the slip attached to this letter. Thank you.

Yours sincerely

A new item this year at the Christmas Cracker will be a group of infant and junior children singing Christmas songs in the hall at around 4.15 pm. We are all looking forward to this.

New Admissions

We need to advise the Department of Education and Children of our final numbers for September 2013 in order that staff allocations can be made. If you know of anyone with a child due to start in September who has not yet registered please can you ask them to contact the school as soon as possible.

School Holiday Dates

Accompanying this letter is the latest holiday dates sheet (2012 - 2015) from the Department of Education and Children. Please note that it is correct that there are two weeks for TT in 2015. This is because the Manx Grand Prix is very late that year (22nd August to 4th September).

Dear Parents

Lempen Puppet Theatre

Children in Reception to Year 3 had a fantastic time this morning watching the Lempen Puppet Theatre who were booked to perform at the infant site. Ask your children to tell you about it tonight.

Christmas Cracker

Thank you to all the parents who have already sent in items to make our Christmas Table Hampers. If you have not had the chance to send one in this week, we would be pleased to receive them any day next week. Thank you.

Our next meeting of the Friends of Scoill yn Jubilee will be Monday afternoon (19th November) at 1.15 pm in the Visitors Room to make up hampers and create posters for our stalls. Everyone welcome, no skills required!

Christmas Cracker Tickets

Entrance to the event is by ticket only which may now be purchased from the school offices £1 for adults and 50p for children. These can be exchanged for refreshments (tea/coffee and hot mince pie for adults, juice and biscuit for children) at the fair.

Helpers

From this Monday (19th) we will have sign up sheets outside both school offices for any parents who can help to man a stall for half an hour at the fair. We hope you can help.

If you have any spare time on Monday afternoon 26th November - 1.30 pm to 3.15 pm, to help set up items for the fair we would be very pleased to see you.

We also need help on the Tuesday afternoon of the fair 27th November - 1.30 pm to 3.15 pm to set up the stalls.

Please complete the attached slips if you are able to help prepare for the fair on either of these afternoons. Thank you.

Christmas Cracker Request for Items

Between now and our Christmas Cracker event (Tuesday 27th November) we will be allocating different days for collections of a variety of donations to support our event. Our special days next week are :-

Tea Towels

All children have made a named drawing of themselves for our school tea towel. The 2012-2013 infant and junior tea towels will be available from the fair. From Wednesday 28th November each classroom will have a copy of the tea towel displayed with an order form and envelope for cheques/cash. Ideal as a Christmas present. Limited stock available.

Year 2 FILMCLUB (INFANT SCHOOL ONLY)

Our next Filmclub event will be on Thursday (22nd November) where we will be showing “The Ant Bully” (U certificate) as part of our Anti-bullying week. Year 2 children may be collected from their classrooms at 4.30 pm. If your child wishes to attend please could you complete the slip attached to this letter. Thank you.

Parking

A resident who lives opposite the junior school on Palatine Road has a special “Reserved” parking space painted on the road outside her property. The resident has been in touch with the school as some parents have been parking in the spot at the end of the school day and it is causing her problems. Could we ask all parents to observe parking restrictions on the roads around the school buildings. Parking in the lanes either side of the junior school is still causing concern. Police officers are regularly monitoring the situation at both sites. Thank you.

Lost Property

We have a growing mountain of lost property items at both infant and junior school halls. Please could you ensure all school uniform and sports kits are named. Thank you.

Start of the School Day

Could we remind parents of Reception children that their children should not use any of the equipment set out before school as this is all mad ready in preparation for teaching time. Some junior children are still arriving very early in the morning. This is of particular concern on wet days when the school doors do not open until 8.40 am.

Christmas Shoebox Appeal

Many thanks to the children and parents who prepared and sent in filled and decorated shoe boxes. They have now all been collected and are on their way to help children less fortunate than our own to have special Christmas treats.

Dinner/Juice and Snack Money Reminder

A reminder to any parents that still owe dinner money, juice/milk and/or snack money, please could they send the due amount into the appropriate school office as soon as possible, in an envelope marked with the pupil’s name. Thank you.

Dear Parents

After School Club

If your child is collected by an After School Club from the Infants, please could you complete the attached slip in order that we have a record of which Nursery/Children’s Centre your child attends and on which afternoons.

If these arrangements change you are requested to inform the school on the day, in addition

to informing the after school club.

National Anti - Bullying Week 19th - 23rd November

Every year we focus for a week on strategies to prevent bullying happening in school. We have few incidences across the two sites and have a successful strategy for dealing quickly with any incident. The senior staff are working on amalgamating the behaviour and anti - bullying policies from the two sites to produce a revised policy for Scoill yn Jubilee. We will send out a copy of this policy once it has been agreed by staff and governors.

The school will have assemblies and events through the anti -bullying week to help children become confident with any situations they may have to deal with. The focus this year is “We’re better without bullying”.

Christmas Cracker

This is our annual Christmas Fair taking place on Tuesday 27th November at the infant site. It is for infant and junior children and their parents/grandparents.

Over the next three weeks we will be asking you to support our event in a variety of ways. The money we raise at these fundraising events is used for a variety of purposes. Examples are :– A present for each child from Santa, Christmas Parties, transport for educational visits, booking visiting theatre and music groups for school, playground toys for playtimes and lunchtimes, refreshments for the elderly and disabled at our community play performance.

Unlike many schools we never ask parents to pay for any of the above for their children. We prefer to raise the money through enjoyable school events.

Any additional funds are used to support major projects for the children. This year we are raising funds towards large static equipment for our school playgrounds.

A popular event at our fair is the Christmas Table Hamper stall. We would welcome any cardboard boxes or baskets to use to make up hampers. They may be brought to either school hall any day next week and left in the designated areas.

Could we ask all children to bring in at least one item which can be used to make Christmas table hampers.

Suggested items are :-

Wine, mulled wine, chocolates, chocolate tree decorations, napkins, mince pies, preserved fruit, shortbread biscuits, Christmas pudding, crackers, tree decorations, balloons, Christmas biscuits, chocolate coins, Christmas sweets, bags/tins of nuts, Christmas cake, candles, Christmas novelties.

Items may be brought into the hall any day next week and the following week and left in the allocated area at the back of the school halls. Thank you for your support.

Super Raffle

Over the next two weeks, commencing Monday 12th November we will be selling raffle tickets on the infant and junior playgrounds for 15 minutes after school to raise funds for our new playground equipment. Tickets cost £2 per strip. We have 3 fantastic prizes on offer:-

1st Prize - WII with Mariocart.

2nd Prize - A 19’ HD Ready LED TV/DVD combi.

3rd Prize - A freestanding basket ball.

A new item at the fair this year will be infant and junior children entertaining you with Christmas songs.

We would welcome any parent or grandparent helpers to join us at the infant site on the afternoons of 19th November and Tuesday 20th November from 1.30 pm to make up hampers and prepare stall items. Just come along, you will be most welcome. Please sign and return the attached slip if you can help.

Jesus in the Manger

On Wednesday 12th December at 2.00 pm the infants will be performing a Christmas play for invited elderly or disabled members of the community. If you wish to nominate someone to attend this special performance we would be pleased to send them an invitation.

We are only able to accept one nomination from a family due to fire regulations controlling the size of the audience. Please inform the school administrator of your nomination in writing and we will do our best to accommodate all requests.

Reception Writing Workshop

We are holding a workshop for parents of Reception children in the Infant Hall on Thursday 15th November at 2.15 pm to explain how we teach handwriting and encourage children to write. You will be able to visit the classrooms at the end of the workshop to see how our activities support learning to write. If you would like to attend please complete the attached slip and return to the school office. We look forward to seeing you.

Jubilee Tots

Jubilee Tots will hold their last session of the Autumn term next week (Wednesday 14th November) as we will require the hall for Christmas activities for the next few weeks. the first session after Christmas will be on Wednesday 9th January 2013.

Smoking

Could I remind parents that smoking is not permitted inside the school grounds. Thank you.

Coats

Please could all children bring a coat to school each day as the weather is turning cold and can be very changeable.

Venture Centre

A reminder for Year 6 parents that if your child wishes to take part in the Maughold Venture week in July the £50 deposit needs to be paid into school by Friday 7th December.

Seat Belts

Accompanying this letter is a leaflet advising on seat belt law.

The main requirements under law are:-

- all children under 4 years old must use the correct child seat when travelling in any car or goods vehicle. Children aged 4 years and under 12 must use the correct child seat/booster seat/booster cushion when travelling in cars or goods vehicles until they reach 135cms (approx 4’5”). Few exceptions are permitted;

- children aged 4 years and under 12 must use the correct child seat/booster seat/booster cushion when travelling in cars or goods vehicles until they reach 135cms (approx 4’5”). Few exceptions are permitted;

  • rear-facing baby seats must not be used in seats with an active frontal air-bag;

The Road Policing Unit have noted the following:-

  1. Numerous drivers are bringing their friends children to school but do not have

booster seats for them.

2. Sometimes mum & dad have different cars and the seats are kept in the other car.

  1. Sometimes the child dictates that they are sitting in the front without a booster

seat but there is one sitting unused in the back seat.

  1. Some children are too tall for the booster seats (more than 135cm / 4ft 5in) and

the seat belt sits lower on their body than designed.

Dear Parents

Halloween Spooktacular (stalls and refreshments for infants and juniors) Halloween Disco (juniors only)

Both events are taking place at the Junior school. Thank you to the parents who have sent in an orange item for our stall. We have 373 children on roll at present. If every child could bring one orange item (to either school hall) we would have a fantastic stall. Items can be brought in any day this week.

We would also welcome any cakes/biscuits on the day (at either school site). Tickets are on sale at both offices, just 50p, entitling you to a drink and a biscuit. Don’t forget to bring your decorated pumpkin to the Junior hall on the day for the competition.

Year 5 will be holding a stall, in aid of WaterAid, selling cakes they have made in class. We are still looking for helpers to set up and man stalls, and support the Junior disco. If you can help please phone or add your name to the lists outside the school offices. Thank you.

Late arrivals

We are concerned about the number of children at both sites arriving late for school. Children are very uncomfortable arriving in class after their peers are settled. Late arrival will be recorded on all school reports. If a child arrives after 9.15am this is classed as unauthorised absence, again recorded on the report.

School Meals

With this letter is an information leaflet provided by the School Meals Service with the latest news and a copy of the menus for after half term until the end of the Spring Term 2013.

Spare Swimming Kit

If you have spare/outgrown swimming costumes, swimming trunks or any spare towels the Junior school would welcome them for any children who forgot their kit on their swimming day. Thank you.

Venture Centre

We have provisionally booked for a party of Year 6 children to visit the Venture Centre in Maughold 8th-12th July 2012. The total cost for the trip is £255.00 which can be paid in installments (details of amounts will be sent at a later date). The Venture Centre has asked us to pay a deposit of £50 (non-refundable) per pupil by Christmas to secure our booking. If your child expresses an interest in going on the trip I would be obliged to receive your payment as soon as possible to secure a place. Please complete the attached slip and return it to school together with your payment. Thank you.

Hosting a French Pupil

If any Year 5 and 6 families wish to host a French pupil this year, please could they return the paperwork by Tuesday 6th November. Thank you.

Clubs

At the end of any club (with the exception of FILMCLUB) please could parents collect children from the front entrance of the schools.

Miss Keenan

We are delighted for Miss Keenan that she has now been appointed to a full time position at Ballacottier Nursery commencing after half term. Miss Keenan has been a real asset to our Reception classes whilst covering Mrs Wilson’s maternity leave. We will miss her and wish her all the best in her new role. We are very lucky to have been able to employ Mrs Hindley to cover the rest of Mrs Wilson’s leave, as she has worked on a voluntary basis in Reception for the last school year and this term, so knows all the children and routines of Reception.

Health and Safety

Parents at both schools have expressed concerns over cars being parked at places around the schools which are causing a danger. Can we ask that parents at the Infants do not block the access around Thorny Road and the lane by leaving their cars unattended on the road and lane. Junior parents are asked not to park cars in the side lanes, again creating a hazard for children. Thank you.

Douglas Borough Daffodil Competition

Scoill yn Jubilee is one of 9 Douglas schools involved in a daffodil growing competition. Every child is taking home a bulb they have planted at school to care for until March 2013. The date for judging will be given in February. Pots may be decorated, form part of a model, etc – be creative!

Each class will be judged by an expert Horticulturist and each class winner judged to finally find the best in School, and then eventually best in Borough.

Instructions:

Water the compost once a week so that it is moist - make sure you don’t water it too much.

Between October and December place your pot outdoors somewhere sunlight can get to it. Your teacher will ask you to bring your pot back at a later date.

Ensure pots are kept in a frost-free place.

Remember to bring your pots indoors in the middle of January and prepare to watch them bloom.

You should shelter your plants in a garage or shed if there is severe frost or snow.

If your daffodils are slow to bloom place them somewhere warm. If they are blooming too fast place them somewhere cool.

Operation Christmas Child

Accompanying this letter is a leaflet informing you of Operation Christmas Child. If you would like to take part in this event please could you bring your completed shoe box to the school hall by 9th November ready for collection. This is a purely voluntary event - there is no obligation to take part.

Yellow Moon

With this letter we are sending out a Yellow Moon catalogue. 25% of the cost of each item purchased is given as commission to the school. This money is used to pay towards Christmas parties for the children at the end of this term. If we send all the orders off together to Yellow Moon directly there will be no postage charge. If you would like to support this fundraiser please deliver your completed order form to the school office together with your payment (cheques payable to Ballaquayle Infants School). DON’T FORGET THE POSTAGE IS FREE. All orders need to be back in school by Tuesday 6th November to ensure items are back well in time for Christmas.

FILMCLUB

Last year the Infants were chosen as a pilot school on the island to run a FILMCLUB. The club was open to all Year 2 children. We now have permission to open up FILMCLUB to the junior school. If you wish your child to attend any of our FILMCLUB events for 2012/13 we need you to complete and return the attached parental consent form in advance of the first session. FILMCLUB will run from 3.00pm – 4.20pm in the Infant school hall and 3.10pm – 4.30pm in the Juniors. Year 2 children may be collected from outside their classrooms. Junior children will leave by the usual playground door. Children may bring a drink and snack to consume during the film. Out first FILMCLUB event will be on Thursday 8th November. Infants will be able to watch “The Curse of the Were Rabbit” and the Juniors will be offered “Hoodwinked”. If you wish your child to attend this event please complete the attached slip and return to school by Friday 25th October. There is no limit on numbers to attend FILMCLUB so anyone who applies will be able to attend the event.

Yours sincerely

This means you can now order all the books in your Book Clubs leaflet and many more at http://clubs-school.scholastic.co.uk/murrays-road. Books will then be delivered to school, usually about 7 working days after the closing date.

You need to order your books by Friday 9th November. After that date, Miss Miller will confirm the order and the books will be delivered to school to be handed out in class. For every £1 you spend 20p goes back to our school to spend on much needed books for the infant and junior libraries

If however you prefer to pay by cash or cheque please have your order in school by the same date. Please fill out the order form carefully and be sure to include your name and class on the order form together with the correct money. Place the money in an envelope stating your child’s name and class and hand to either school office. All cheques should be made payable to Ballaquayle Infants School.

School Photographs

Just a reminder that the individual and class photograph orders will be collected by Andrew Barton on Friday 19th October. Therefore, please can any outstanding orders with payment be returned to the school office no later than the end of school on Thursday.

Class photographs (cost £8.50) are on view in each classroom. Please send payment (cash or cheque – payable to A B Photography Ltd) in a sealed envelope clearly stating your child’s name, class and photograph code to the school office. Thank you.

Photo Re-sits

Andrew Barton will be holding re-sits on Wednesday 24th October from 4pm – 6.30pm and on Tuesday 30th October from 10am – 12pm. If anyone is interested please could they go to the new Studio, which was the old Post Office, Court Row, Ramsey. Any queries please phone 817817.

Hospital Appointment

Could I remind parents that if a child needs to be absent from school for a hospital/doctor/dentist appointment, for this to be classed as authorized absence, the appointment needs to be confirmed either by production of an appointment card or by a letter from the child’s parent/carer. Thank you.

Dinner times at the juniors

Some year 6 parents have expressed concern that they feel their children are missing out on choices of hot dinners by coming last into the dining hall each day. Our plan had been to start a rota system after half term once routines had been established but we have now decided to start next week to address the concern. Year 3 will have lunch first each day. Years 4, 5 and 6 will have lunch at a different time each week so that they see the system as being fair.

Fruity Friday

At Scoill yn Jubilee we strive to be a ‘Healthy School’ and we are inviting children to take part in ‘Fruity Friday’ on Friday 26th October. We would like children who have a packed

lunch to bring healthy food and snacks to eat in their packed lunches. We would ask that children bring bottled water that day in their lunch boxes as a healthier alternative to juice.

Teachers will also be invited to join children in the dinner hall on the day to eat their a healthy lunch. Please support us by trying your best to pack a healthy lunch.

Could we remind parents that children need to have a drink in their lunch box each day and to ensure your child has a spoon if they bring yoghurt for lunch. Thank you.

Mini clubs

Across the year we will be offering a series of mini clubs ( 6 week clubs) providing a range of activities for children to try. The clubs for the second half of the autumn term are: -

Year 2 only

Christmas Sewing Club with Mrs Murphy. Mondays 3.15pm – 4.00pm

Christmas Craft Club with Ms Watson. Thursdays 12.15pm – 1.00pm

All Juniors Christmas Craft Club with Mrs Miller. Thursdays 3.30pm – 4.15pm.

The clubs run from w/c 5th November. Places for each club will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Please complete the attached slip if your child wishes to attend.

Friends of Scoill yn Jubilee

To accommodate all parents we have made the decision to hold Friends’ meetings alternately during the school day and in the evening. The next meeting will be on Tuesday 6th November in the infant staff room, commencing 2.00pm to plan for our Christmas Cracker (fayre).

The following meeting will be on Tuesday 13th November commencing 6pm in the junior school to organize a Pamper Evening. Everyone welcome (parents, grandparents, friends of the school).

Swimming lessons

To ensure we have the correct ration of adults to pupils to travel to and from the NSC pool we need 1 additional parent for each Year 4 class. If you are able to help, and have been police checked, please contact the junior school office, even if you are not able to support every week. Thank you.

Sickness bug

Can I remind parents that children need to remain at home for 48 hours after being free from symptoms, if they have had vomiting and/or diarrhoea.

Yours sincerely

Newsletter 24/9/12

Dear Parents,

Parent Interviews

Interviews to enable you to discuss your child’s progress are to be held on two evenings this term to give parents a range of appointment choices. The dates and times for both infants and juniors are as follows: Tuesday 2nd October 4 - 7.30 pm and Wednesday 3rd October 4 - 6.00 pm. Interviews are arranged for 10 minutes for each child. If you wish to see your child’s teacher for a longer meeting at a later date please arrange this at the interview.

Please return the attached form as soon as possible indicating your preferred time and we will do our best to accommodate you accordingly. Please indicate on the form if you have other children in Scoill yn Jubilee, so that the teachers can liaise over times. All replies should be in by this Wednesday to enable the class teacher to make an appointment which we can return to you by the end of the week.

Please could I remind parents that children do not accompany them for these interviews.

This initial interview is to discuss how your child has settled into his/her year group and discuss how you can help at home. We will inform you of any academic, social or behaviour concerns we may have about your child and how we can work together to improve these. If we do not raise any concerns please be assured that we are happy with all aspects of your child’s development in school.

Uniform Update

Naming items

The staff from both sites have asked me to make a plea for all uniform, sports kits and coats to be named so that we can prevent confusion and reduce the amount of time used trying to match uniforms to pupils.

Shoes

Could I remind parents that footwear for pupils is either navy or black shoes. Black or other coloured trainers are not acceptable as school uniform.

Jewellery

The only jewellery permitted for pupils in school is a watch, and sleepers if ears have been pierced. This is mainly for safety reasons and to ensure valued items are not lost or go missing in school.

Thank you.

Junior Choir

Mrs Keig and Miss Corkish have offered to start a junior choir, commencing next Friday (28th September) 3.30 to 4.30 pm. Pupils will need to commit to attending every week. If your child is interested they need to meet in Mrs Keig’s classroom at 12.45 this Tuesday to sign in.

External Visits – Permission Slips

We are still outstanding some permission slips for some Year 1 to Year 6 pupils. Please could these be returned to the school office as soon as possible. If you have mislaid the slip please call at the school office for a new one. Thank you.

Water

We have had some queries from parents of junior pupils re drinking water in school. Children should not drink straight from the water fountains as there is a risk of cross contamination. We have purchased water jugs and cups (the same as we have in the infants) which will be available in all year group shared areas for pupils to access across the day. If you prefer your

child to bring a named water bottle in preference to this, that is fine. We aim to be a healthy school and request that this is just plain water.

To answer another query, junior children are welcome to bring raw carrots, cucumber etc as a preference to fruit for their morning snack.

Thank you.

Parent Concerns/Worries

If you wish to speak with a member of staff, you are welcome to contact you child’s school office with a brief description of the reason for your appointment and the time that is most suitable for you to visit. The administrator will confirm the nearest available time with staff and get back to you as soon as possible. Should you wish to communicate general information and an appointment is unnecessary then please feel free to pop into your child’s classroom at the start or end of the school day.

Coats

Could I remind parents that pupils need to bring a coat into school everyday for break times and lunchtimes. Both school playgrounds can be very windy spots!

Isle of Man Children's Centre Play Survey

All schools have been invited by the IOM Children's Centre to invite children and parents to take part in a play survey

This survey is for parents and guardians to complete but can however be given to other adults should the child wish. To add a bit of extra encouragement every adult that completes the survey will be entered into a prize draw to win a family ticket to one of the UK's leading alternative theme parks "The Crocky Trail" (honestly its amazing and the more adults you give this survey to the more chances you have of winning.) Yours playfully, Chris Gregory Play Development Officer The Children's Centre.

Parents have one month to complete the online survey (from today) and it can be found at https://www.playsurvey.co/s/iomparent. There are hard copies available for parents who do not have internet access.

School Photographs

Andrew Barton photographers will visit the junior school on Wednesday 26th September and the infants school on Thursday 27th September to take your child’s photograph. School uniform should be worn. Brothers and sisters within school will be photographed together as well as individually. Should you wish to include younger or older children in a family photograph they should be brought to the Infants’ School Hall at 8.50 am on Thursday 27th.

Sports /PE lessons for Junior pupils

When the weather is fine we will often have sports lessons outside. Pupils will need track suit bottoms, sweatshirt and trainers to take part comfortably in colder weather.

These are the days for the autumn term when junior pupils will need to have external sports kits in school:

3SO - Tuesday

3AM/FB - Monday

4AJ - Wednesday

4SM - Wednesday

5AM - Monday and Wednesday

5MH - Monday and Friday

6TW - Tuesday and Friday

6MK - Tuesday and Friday

Spare P.E, Kits

If any parents have navy shorts and red t-shirts which no longer fit your child we would be pleased to accept them to create spare PE kits for each year group for the odd occasion when children forget to bring their kit to school. Thank you.

Parents helping in school

We have always regarded the partnership between parents and teachers as a vital one and some invaluable help has been provided by parents who work with children in school. As it is the beginning of a new academic year we would once again like to ask if there are any parents, grandparents or carers, who would be able to help on a regular basis with activities in school, eg. art, craft, computers, literacy and numeracy, cookery, etc. (Reception parents have already given us an indication of support they can offer).

In addition we are also looking for volunteers to help teachers by preparing work for display, photocopying, collating materials etc. Please complete the slip at the end of this letter if you are able to help and we will send out a police check form for completion and return (if you have not already completed one).

Parent/Library Helpers

To keep both school libraries working successfully we would be delighted if any parents could commit to giving 15 minutes of their time after school one day a

week to sort books and return them to their correct place on the shelves. We

have operated this system at the infants school for several years and it has been a successful initiative which we would wish to continue at both school sites. Your children are welcome to help you to sort the library each week. Please complete the attached slip stating your preference for the day to support the library. Thank you

Friends of Scoill yn Jubilee

The first meeting this year for “The Friends of Scoill yn Jubilee” will be held on Tuesday 9th October at 6 pm in the junior school. We will arrange, for both infant and junior pupils, fund-raising and social events for the term at this meeting. Any parents/grandparents/carers are welcome to attend. These are informal meetings where we welcome suggestions and ideas to provide enjoyable events and raise funds to purchase additional items for the children to make their school life even better.

Year 5 and 6 Parents

King William’s College will be holding an open morning for any interested Year 5 and 6 parents on Saturday 6th October from 10 am to 1 pm. If you would like to attend please contact their Admissions Office by 4th October on 820110 or email admissions@kwc.sch.im.
