Dear Parents


Halloween Spooktacular (stalls and refreshments for infants and juniors) Halloween Disco (juniors only)

Both events are taking place at the Junior school. Thank you to the parents who have sent in an orange item for our stall. We have 373 children on roll at present. If every child could bring one orange item (to either school hall) we would have a fantastic stall. Items can be brought in any day this week.

We would also welcome any cakes/biscuits on the day (at either school site). Tickets are on sale at both offices, just 50p, entitling you to a drink and a biscuit. Don’t forget to bring your decorated pumpkin to the Junior hall on the day for the competition.

Year 5 will be holding a stall, in aid of WaterAid, selling cakes they have made in class. We are still looking for helpers to set up and man stalls, and support the Junior disco. If you can help please phone or add your name to the lists outside the school offices. Thank you.


Late arrivals

We are concerned about the number of children at both sites arriving late for school. Children are very uncomfortable arriving in class after their peers are settled. Late arrival will be recorded on all school reports. If a child arrives after 9.15am this is classed as unauthorised absence, again recorded on the report.


School Meals

With this letter is an information leaflet provided by the School Meals Service with the latest news and a copy of the menus for after half term until the end of the Spring Term 2013.


Spare Swimming Kit

If you have spare/outgrown swimming costumes, swimming trunks or any spare towels the Junior school would welcome them for any children who forgot their kit on their swimming day. Thank you.


Venture Centre

We have provisionally booked for a party of Year 6 children to visit the Venture Centre in Maughold 8th-12th July 2012. The total cost for the trip is £255.00 which can be paid in installments (details of amounts will be sent at a later date). The Venture Centre has asked us to pay a deposit of £50 (non-refundable) per pupil by Christmas to secure our booking. If your child expresses an interest in going on the trip I would be obliged to receive your payment as soon as possible to secure a place. Please complete the attached slip and return it to school together with your payment. Thank you.


Hosting a French Pupil

If any Year 5 and 6 families wish to host a French pupil this year, please could they return the paperwork by Tuesday 6th November. Thank you.


Clubs

At the end of any club (with the exception of FILMCLUB) please could parents collect children from the front entrance of the schools.


Miss Keenan

We are delighted for Miss Keenan that she has now been appointed to a full time position at Ballacottier Nursery commencing after half term. Miss Keenan has been a real asset to our Reception classes whilst covering Mrs Wilson’s maternity leave. We will miss her and wish her all the best in her new role. We are very lucky to have been able to employ Mrs Hindley to cover the rest of Mrs Wilson’s leave, as she has worked on a voluntary basis in Reception for the last school year and this term, so knows all the children and routines of Reception.


Health and Safety

Parents at both schools have expressed concerns over cars being parked at places around the schools which are causing a danger. Can we ask that parents at the Infants do not block the access around Thorny Road and the lane by leaving their cars unattended on the road and lane. Junior parents are asked not to park cars in the side lanes, again creating a hazard for children. Thank you.


Douglas Borough Daffodil Competition

Scoill yn Jubilee is one of 9 Douglas schools involved in a daffodil growing competition. Every child is taking home a bulb they have planted at school to care for until March 2013. The date for judging will be given in February. Pots may be decorated, form part of a model, etc – be creative!

Each class will be judged by an expert Horticulturist and each class winner judged to finally find the best in School, and then eventually best in Borough.

Instructions:

Water the compost once a week so that it is moist - make sure you don’t water it too much.

Between October and December place your pot outdoors somewhere sunlight can get to it. Your teacher will ask you to bring your pot back at a later date.

Ensure pots are kept in a frost-free place.

Remember to bring your pots indoors in the middle of January and prepare to watch them bloom.

You should shelter your plants in a garage or shed if there is severe frost or snow.

If your daffodils are slow to bloom place them somewhere warm. If they are blooming too fast place them somewhere cool.


Operation Christmas Child

Accompanying this letter is a leaflet informing you of Operation Christmas Child. If you would like to take part in this event please could you bring your completed shoe box to the school hall by 9th November ready for collection. This is a purely voluntary event - there is no obligation to take part.


Yellow Moon

With this letter we are sending out a Yellow Moon catalogue. 25% of the cost of each item purchased is given as commission to the school. This money is used to pay towards Christmas parties for the children at the end of this term. If we send all the orders off together to Yellow Moon directly there will be no postage charge. If you would like to support this fundraiser please deliver your completed order form to the school office together with your payment (cheques payable to Ballaquayle Infants School). DON’T FORGET THE POSTAGE IS FREE. All orders need to be back in school by Tuesday 6th November to ensure items are back well in time for Christmas.


FILMCLUB

Last year the Infants were chosen as a pilot school on the island to run a FILMCLUB. The club was open to all Year 2 children. We now have permission to open up FILMCLUB to the junior school. If you wish your child to attend any of our FILMCLUB events for 2012/13 we need you to complete and return the attached parental consent form in advance of the first session. FILMCLUB will run from 3.00pm – 4.20pm in the Infant school hall and 3.10pm – 4.30pm in the Juniors. Year 2 children may be collected from outside their classrooms. Junior children will leave by the usual playground door. Children may bring a drink and snack to consume during the film. Out first FILMCLUB event will be on Thursday 8th November. Infants will be able to watch “The Curse of the Were Rabbit” and the Juniors will be offered “Hoodwinked”. If you wish your child to attend this event please complete the attached slip and return to school by Friday 25th October. There is no limit on numbers to attend FILMCLUB so anyone who applies will be able to attend the event.
