Island of Culture 2014 is an Isle of Man Arts Council led initiative supported by the Isle of Man Government – to celebrate all that the Island has to offer culturally, and bring over new artistic experiences.
An important aspect of Island of Culture 2014 is to involve, and create a legacy for, the young people of the Isle of Man and to give them a chance to get involved in cultural activities they may not have engaged with previously.
Schools and young people can participate in the year in a number of ways – by attending performances they might not otherwise get the chance to see; by staging cultural activities of their own; by bringing popular cultural events that are already fixtures in the school calendar under the ‘Island of Culture’ banner; by enjoying visits to schools by artists, performers and the like. It’s hoped opportunities for staff development will be included in the programme for the year. It’s also hoped that young people will get a chance to collaborate on works and performances that will serve as a reminder of the year’s activities.
A DEC working group is planning events.
Opportunities to get involved and details of events will appear here. Key contacts are: primary: Jonathan Ayres (Arbory Primary School); secondary: Helen Almond (Castle Rushen High School); Manx curriculum – Jo Callister, Advisory Teacher; administration – Jo Overty.
Re schools participation generally, Jo and I felt this would fall into all these categories:
Big events schools travel to as an audience
Big events that schools participate in
Events in regions/clusters
Events in schools badges under IoC
Visiting artists/performers database to schools to select from
Activities and visiting arts activities tghat schools already have booked
CPD (as touched on at the meeting, IoM College has been asked what it can do)
(Have I missed anything?)
