いらっしゃいませ / Welcome,
This wiki is for people who want to find out, and maybe learn some 日本語 (Nihongo) - Japanese language.
Japanese is spoken by 130,000,000 native speakers living in Japan and around the world. In addition, there are 2,300,000 people around the world studying Japanese as a second language.
You may not realise it, but you already know many Japanese words;
本田 Honda 川崎 Kawasaki スズキ Suzuki 山生 Yamaha 豊田 Toyota 任天堂 Nintendo 空手 Karate 柔道 Judo
侍 Samurai 相撲 Sumo カラオケ karaoke 津波 tsunami 寿司 sushi 折り紙 origami 盆栽 bonsai 漫画 manga
Before starting to learn Japanese there are some points to consider:
1: Japanese uses four writing systems, sometimes all four in the same sentence!
3: The vocabulary of Japanese is very different to European languages like English, French, German and Spanish.
4. Japanese grammar is quite different to any European language.
1. There are only two irregular verbs.
2: The basic grammar is quite straight forward.
3: Compared to most languages, learners find the pronunciation of Japanese quite easy.
For GCSE, the course we are going to take is called 'Chikara' (Power). It is provided free of charge by the Japan Foundation London Language Centre. The textbook for each unit is available for download in PDF form here. You will also find some useful ICT based learning activities at the site.
