Minibus Appeal

We have always tried to enhance our children’s education by providing an exciting range of trips and visits. Our Manx community is wonderfully supportive and offers a wide variety of cultural, sporting and educational opportunities for our children. We currently rely on the generosity of our parent helpers to transport children as the cost of private coaches and buses has become prohibitive. However, this approach is becoming more difficult as more parents return to work. We don’t want to compromise or restrict our provision and feel that we need to look at a workable solution.

Our plan is to purchase the minibus currently belonging to Ramsey Grammar School, which will provide an excellent vehicle at a reasonable cost. We plan to fund the purchase by raising half the money ourselves and by requesting a Manx Lottery Trust Grant for the other half. The minibus would be based at school and be available for use by any of our affiliated community organisations.

We have written to our local neighbours to inform them of our plans and hopefully they will feel they can support our efforts.

The cost of the bus will be in the region of £16,000 - £17,000, depending on the market valuation at the time. It will become available at Easter when RGS take delivery of their new bus. It will be a big challenge to raise the funds but our PTA has agreed to support the project. We are in the process of submitting a request for a Lottery Grant, which will have a significant bearing on the viability of the project.

PTA Mhelliah

The latest Mhelliah was a great success,

compared brilliantly by Michael Taggart. Many thanks to all the parents who helped organise the event, donated gifts and spent their money bidding for a huge range of produce and pledges. It is events like this, fun and community based, which are so important to the school. The PTA raised over £3000 from the Mhelliah and this additional support will make such a difference to the education and enjoyment of all our children. I do hope that all our parents feel they can help support the school in some way, by helping organise events or by joining us in our fund raising efforts from time to time.

Remembrance Service

Our Year 6 children will be presenting a special Remembrance Service on Friday 9th November at 9.30am. This Service has become a tradition at our school and is a very moving tribute. The Year 6 children would like to invite their parents to join them on this special occasion.

Harvest Festival

We will be holding our Harvest Festival Service at Sulby Methodist Church on Wednesday 24th October from 9.20am. The Service will be hosted jointly by Reverend Andrew and Reverend Rogers. The children will walk though the school grounds to the church and return after the Service at around 10.00am. Please will you let school know if you would rather your child did not take part in this event. Parents are very welcome to join us for the Service.

School Tea Towels 2013

All of our children will be contributing a portrait, which will be included on our Sulby School Tea Towel for 2013. We will be sending an information letter and an order form to parents after half term. The tea towels will make great Christmas presents for relatives and friends as well as a providing a nice reminder of the school year!

Action Songs

We are very pleased to be hosting a weekly ‘Action Songs’ session, organised by the Children’s Centre, which takes place every Tuesday from 9.15am. The group is open to all pre-schoolers. If you would like your child to attend, please just come to the school hall on the day.

Welcome Back

On behalf of all the staff at Sulby Primary School, I would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone at the beginning of the new school year. As usual many new children and families have joined us this year and I hope they will enjoy being part of our school community.

Allergies and asthma

Two of our children have serious nut allergies and we are asking parents to avoid sending nuts to school in children’s snacks or lunch boxes. Also if your child has asthma please can you complete an Asthma Card, available from the office, and ensure that we have two inhalers available in school.

We are encouraging all children to bring a healthy snack to school for break time. A piece of fruit is the ideal morning snack and this should be stored in an appropriate, named container.

Home Time

We are reminding all our junior children that they should be collected by the railings at the end of the school day. However, if you are happy for your child to leave the collection area unaccompanied, please ensure you have signed and return the appropriate form.

Our mail order uniform supplier continues to be very popular and we are planning to send this term’s order on Monday November 12th. An order sheet is available from the office if you require any items.

Driver’s Declaration

Many thanks to all the parents who helped with our trips and visits last year. Without your support we wouldn’t be able to plan as many out of school opportunities for our children to enjoy. If you feel you may be able to help with transport from time to time this year we need you to complete and return a new ’Driver’s Declaration’. We have attached a copy of the form to this newsletter. If you require any information about helping in school or helping with school trips please contact Mr Jackson. We appreciate and value your support.

Parents’ Evenings

This term will be on Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th October. Further
information will be sent nearer the time.

Water Bottles

We encourage the children to drink plenty of water during the day. Each child should have a water bottle in school, which we keep in class. Children can fill these from our water fountains but bottles should be changed or washed frequently.

Bags and belongings

Our cloakrooms are becoming overwhelmed with the large bags children are bringing to school. It would be really helpful if children can just bring their reading bag on a daily basis with a bigger bag for club equipment and swimming, when required.

Half term From Monday 29th October to Friday 2nd November.

Lunches, milk and juice

Please can all parents complete and return the enclosed form to confirm lunch and morning drink arrangements. All payment does need to be made in advance on a weekly or half- termly basis. Milk and juice will begin on Monday 10th September.

Chicken Pox

Please can you advise the school if you believe anyone in your family may have been in contact with chicken pox. This will allow us to warn parents whose children need additional and important protection from the virus.

School Handbook

We have produced a new school handbook for each year group and this has will be sent to all parents on Monday. We have tried to include general information on our routines and procedures as well as more specific ideas and suggestions relating to each year group. Each teacher has also provided a topic information sheet which explains what the children will be learning during the term.

House Points and Merit Awards

We have started our House Point system this week and will shortly appoint new Captains. The House system is a really important part of the positive ethos we encourage at Sulby. We award a weekly certificate for the child with the most points in each year group and also give a bronze star when a child reaches 100 points. We also recognise 200 and 300 points with silver and gold stars respectively. Children may wear this year’s star badges to school if they choose. Please support us by valuing any award your child brings home.

Although the car park can become quite congested at 3.30pm it only takes a few minutes to clear if everyone is patient. We do remind children to wait on the school side for collection by parents.
